National Work Zone Awareness Week

National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 15-19, 2024!

As spring ushers in warmer weather and longer days, it also marks the beginning of a busy season for road construction and maintenance. With this in mind, the City of Statesville proudly observes Work Zone Awareness Week 2024, a time dedicated to promoting the safety of road workers and the public in work zones.

A work zone refers to an area where roadwork is being carried out and may involve lane closures, detours, and moving equipment. Unfortunately, work zones have become increasingly hazardous for both workers and drivers, with around 40,000 people getting injured each year due to motor vehicle collisions in such areas.

As a driver, it is important to be vigilant when approaching a work zone and look out for signs, cones, barrels, large vehicles, and workers. Work zone signs are usually orange with black letters or symbols and should be observed at all times, even if there are no workers present.

Ensure Safety In A Work Zone

🚧 To ensure your safety and that of the workers in a work zone, it is essential to reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and be prepared to stop if necessary.

🚧 Additionally, it is recommended to use extreme caution when driving through a work zone at night and adjust your lane position to allow sufficient space for workers and construction vehicles.

🚧 You should also expect delays, plan for them, and leave earlier to reach your destination.
🚧 Whenever possible, it is advisable to use alternative routes and avoid work zones altogether.

Work zone signs are usually diamond- or rectangular-shaped and have orange backgrounds with black letters or symbols. These signs warn you of work zones ahead and indicate that people are working on or near the roadway.

Some of the warnings that these signs may convey include workers ahead, reduced speed zones, detours, slow-moving construction equipment, and poor or suddenly changing road surfaces.

In work zones, traffic may be controlled by a person with a sign or flag to direct you on which direction to travel, slow down or stop. It is crucial to follow their instructions at all times. Barriers such as drums, cones, and tubes (panels) are often used to keep traffic out of hazardous work zones and guide drivers safely through the area. Additionally, temporary traffic signals may be employed, and drivers must stop at the white line if one is present.

Ultimately, it is crucial to exercise caution and reduce your speed when driving through work zones to give construction workers a "brake." Do not tailgate and ensure that you do not endanger highway workers.
