Arrests Made in Shooting Incident - 1301 5th Street


On May 2, 2023, the Statesville Police Department responded to a shooting incident at 1301 Fifth Street.  After the shooting, four victims arrived at Iredell Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds. The Violent Crime Unit initiated an investigation into the shooting, and identified several suspects based on obtained evidence.

Chavion Quane’ Smith

On May 18, 2023, warrants were issued for Chavion Quane’ Smith, a 20-year-old resident of Statesville.  Smith was wanted for two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and three counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.  Smith was apprehended by the US Marshals in Greensboro, NC on May 31, 2023, and was granted at $1,000,000 secured bond by the magistrate.

Nashawn Amontea Lester

On June 15, 2023, warrants were issued for Nashawn Amontea Lester, a 29-year-old resident of Charlotte, NC.  Lester was wanted for two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, three counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, and Felony Conspiracy.  Lester was taken into custody by the US Marshals in Charlotte, NC on June 22, 2023, and also received a $1,000,000 secured bond by the magistrate.

The Statesville Police Department would like to thank the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Mooresville Police Department, and the US Marshals Service for their assistance in the investigation and their continued partnership.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no further information is available.
