Celebrating the Retirement of Officer Rodney Burleson

After 43 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, Officer Rodney Burleson has retired for the second time, marking the end of a career filled with commitment, professionalism, and community service.

Officer Burleson's journey began with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, where he served with distinction for 30 years before retiring in 2010. His dedication to public safety and passion for law enforcement led him to continue his service as a Reserve Officer and Part-time Officer with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office from 2010 to 2012.

In 2012, Officer Burleson was sworn in as a Reserve Officer with the Statesville Police Department, and he worked security at Iredell Memorial Hospital until 2014. His journey with SPD continued as he took on a full-time role in the Records Division, serving from 2014. In 2016, he transitioned to the position of Administrative Secretary in Professional Services, and in 2018, he became the Lobby Officer, a role he held with pride until his second retirement on June 28, 2024.

Reflecting on his career, Officer Burleson recalls one of the most significant moments being when Chief Onley was sworn in as chief. This event marked a turning point for the department, bringing about positive changes and improvements.

As he steps into retirement, Officer Burleson plans to take some time off to relax and get a few projects done around the house. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking and playing golf, although he admits he could improve his game to avoid the trees and sand traps.

Officer Burleson achieved his dream job by serving on the State Highway Patrol for 30 years before retiring in 2010. His love for law enforcement kept him in the field, leading to a remarkable 43 years of continued service. When asked what he will miss most, he mentions the people he has worked with and met throughout his career.

To officers just beginning their careers, Officer Burleson offers this advice: “Do the right thing. Do it all the time, even when no one is looking.”

In his farewell message, Officer Burleson expressed his gratitude and well-wishes: “I have enjoyed my time with the Statesville Police Department in various roles. I appreciate the opportunities I have had with the department and wish everyone the best. May God bless you all and keep you safe.”

As Officer Burleson retires, we extend our heartfelt thanks for his unwavering service and dedication. We wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement and future endeavors. Congratulations, Officer Burleson! Enjoy your "second" retirement!
