Keeping Fats, Oils, and Grease out of the Sewer System

FOG (Fat, Oils, & Grease)

Wastewater treatment plants play a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness and health of our environment. They are responsible for treating and purifying the water that goes down our drains before releasing it back into natural water bodies. However, there's an invisible menace lurking in our wastewater that can wreak havoc on these treatment facilities – fat, oil, and grease, collectively known as FOG.

FOG is a byproduct of various human activities, primarily associated with cooking and food preparation. It comprises fats, oils, and greases that can come from sources such as household kitchens, restaurants, food processing plants, and industrial facilities. These substances may seem harmless when they are poured down the drain, but once they enter the wastewater treatment system, they can create significant problems.

Impact on Wastewater Treatment Plants

1. Clogs and Blockages: FOG does not mix well with water and tends to solidify as it cools, leading to the formation of blockages within the wastewater collection and treatment system. These blockages can disrupt the flow of wastewater, causing backups, overflows, and operational issues.

2. Increased Maintenance Costs: To address FOG-related blockages, wastewater treatment plants often need to allocate significant resources for maintenance and cleaning.

3. Reduced Efficiency: FOG can impair the efficiency of treatment processes by interfering with the settling and separation of solids from the water.

Fat, oil, and grease may be unassuming in our daily lives, but they pose a significant threat to wastewater treatment plants and, by extension, the environment. Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach that involves education, regulation, responsible disposal practices, and technological advancements. By taking action to mitigate the impact of FOG, we can ensure the continued effectiveness and sustainability of wastewater treatment systems while preserving the health of our ecosystems.
