Statesville Fire Department Fire Prevention & Safety Education Programs Resumes

Last Updated 5/25/2023Posted in Homepage, Statesville Fire Department, Latest City News

Fire Prevention and Safety Education programs have been revived at the Statesville Fire Department! After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Fire Marshal Pete Morrison and Fire & Life Safety Educator Isaac McCurdy have been working diligently to make sure the youth in our communities are educated.

The department offers numerous programs throughout the year for various age groups and affiliations. First on the list are local preschools. “Teaching preschoolers about fire prevention is not really an easy task,” said Morrison. “We talk to them, but they lose interest quickly. Bringing an engine onsite allows the kids to climb into the truck and explore.” The children are also introduced to firefighters dressed in full turnout gear. “Seeing a firefighter in full gear and with a helmet covering their face can scare a child, even making them runaway during an already stressful situation,” stated McCurdy. “We want them to know that we are here to help, and to ease those potential fears.”

Up next the department will be visiting 4th graders in public and private elementary schools throughout the city. This program is the most structured offered by the department. Some of the topics covered in the lessons include Stop, Drop, and Roll, E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home), Holiday Fire Safety, How to Report an Emergency, and the Chemistry of Fire.

To schedule an educational class with the Statesville Fire Department, please contact Isaac McCurdy at 704-768-5599.
