The Statesville City Council has given the green light for the demolition of the three downtown buildings damaged by fire in March. The request from the building owners was approved during the council meeting on November 20th marking the first step needed to begin the process. The contractor has been in touch with the City and provided a guideline of events that will take place to bring the buildings down.

In the first project phase, the following steps will be taken:

🔹 Plywood will be placed on the sidewalks behind the fenced area on Broad Street and Center Street.

🔹The back-alley fence will be relocated to facilitate equipment movement.

🔹Limited demolition by hand will be performed from man lifts.  This includes the removal of shutters, awnings, metal trim, wood framing, roofing, and some masonry work.

🔹The fencing along Broad Street will be shifted out an additional lane for safety purposes.

Starting Thursday, November 30th, the outside lane near the fence on Broad Street will be closed, but this will not impact traffic flow. The center turn lane will be utilized to keep traffic moving smoothly in both directions.  This lane will remain closed throughout the project.

The project's second stage is set to begin in January 2024. This phase involves the deployment of a crane and the temporary shutdown of Broad Street from Center Street to S. Meeting Street. Additional information about the upcoming second phase will be provided as the date draws near.
