NC Severe Weather Preparedness Week

Last Updated 2/29/2024Posted in Homepage

Severe Weather Preparedness Week in North Carolina is March 3 - 9, 2024. The City of Statesville urges residents to plan now for potential severe weather.

During the spring and summer, North Carolina often experiences thunderstorms associated with the passage of cold and warm fronts as storms developing along the frontal line and can impact all parts of the state. These thunderstorms can bring strong winds and intense rain that can lead to localized flash flooding.

The typical peak tornado season in North Carolina runs from March through May, though tornadoes can occur at any time of year. Although North Carolina has fewer tornadoes than the Midwest, the state still sees an average of 31 tornadoes a year.

Emergency officials recommend residents use and know the following safety tips:

  • Tornado WATCH: A tornado is possible. Tornado WARNING: A tornado has been spotted; take shelter immediately.
  • Know where the nearest safe room is in your home or workplace and go there immediately if you hear or see a tornado. Rooms such as a basement or interior room and away from windows are best.
  • If driving, you should leave your vehicle immediately to seek safety in an adequate structure. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle, and do not stop under an overpass or a bridge.
  • If you are outdoors, and there is no shelter available, take cover in a low-lying flat area. Watch out for flying debris.
  • Following a storm, you will want to wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves and gloves when walking on or near debris. Be aware of exposed nails and broken glass.
  • Be Aware: Damaged power or gas lines and electrical systems may cause fires, electrocution or explosions.
  • Be Weather-Ready: Check the forecast regularly to see if you're at risk for severe weather.
  • Practice Your Plan: Conduct a family severe thunderstorm drill regularly so everyone knows what to do if a tornado is approaching. Make sure all members of your family know to go there when tornado warnings are issued. Don't forget pets if time allows.

We encourage residents to participate in the NC Annual Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 9:30a. Read more here
