City Recognizes National Public Works Week

May 19-25, 2024

During the May 20, 2024 City Council Meeting, Mayor Costi Kutteh proclaimed the week of May 19 through May 25 as National Public Works Week (NPWW). This annual observance, instituted by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in 1960, serves as a public education campaign to highlight the vital role of public works in our communities. The 2024 theme, "Advancing Quality of Life for All," emphasizes how public works professionals  contribute to enhancing the well-being and quality of life in their communities through their dedication to maintaining and improving infrastructure, public spaces, and essential services.

The Essential Services of Statesville’s Public Works Team

The City of Statesville’s Public Works Department comprises six essential service areas:

  • Streets: Our team maintains 142 miles of streets, providing repair services for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, shoulders, pavements, potholes, and street sweeping.
  • Water Resources: We manage the Water Plant, which is permitted to treat up to 15 million gallons daily, and the Wastewater Treatment Plants, which on average treat 3.9 million gallons daily.
  • Water and Sewer Maintenance: This area is responsible for the upkeep of approximately 274 miles of water lines and 278 miles of sanitary sewer lines.
  • Stormwater: Our stormwater management efforts prevent flooding and protect water quality.
  • Sanitation: We offer weekly residential solid waste and recycling curbside collection.
  • Fleet Maintenance: This team performs maintenance and repair of city vehicles, ensuring they are always ready to serve the community.

Public Works: The Backbone of Our Community

Public works professionals are the unsung heroes who keep our community functioning smoothly. They are always ready to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave. Their dedication ensures that our daily lives run seamlessly, from clean water and waste management to safe streets and public spaces.
